The Coppery Shimmer of Great Run

Love this view of Great Run! It’s an oil on copper by Patty Rice that absolutely captures the essence of one my favorite spots described in House Key. Jordan first introduces us to it in Chapter Four, Jury of Peers: “We reached the bottom of the ravine that led to Great Run, a tributary of the Rappahannock River, where there was a clearing and a grassy bank that gave way to a beach of pebbles and smooth river rocks. He sat on the edge of the grass and pulled me down next to him. The ground was damp. We sat anyway, facing the stream in silence for several seconds, watching the cool, silver rush of water gurgling over the rocks before it dropped into a deep, swirling pool. […] I could see one particularly large, flat stone just before the eddy. It was a slab, just a few inches beneath the surface. [… The water] shimmered and I wondered what I would see if I looked in it.”
